Consciously Creating a Life of Your Own

How to consciously create a powerful life

Many of us aspire to having a different life to the one we are currently living. Our aspirations refer to our deeper desires and they are quite different to ambitions. Aspirations can relate to many areas of life and often include the desire to be debt free, to have a particular lifestyle, to gain more formal educational qualifications, to be drug free, or to find inner peace. The more we move towards fulfilling our aspirations, the more fulfilment we experience in life.

Creating the life you want is often associated with a fluffy notion of being able to think yourself into a new reality or that you can somehow attract a better life using the magnetic power of the universe.

Consciously creating the life you want for yourself is a focused, purposeful process and while we cant control the events in our lives, we can greatly influence the life we have. None of us are trapped and doomed to live a life where we have no control or influence over our reality. Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist believed that one’s life purpose was to “discover and realise one’s potential” and that our human spirit calls us to grow, stretch and constantly test our limits.

Viktor Frankl challenges us in his work Man’s Search for Meaning, and gives us no option for excuses. He says that the bottom line is about making change at some level, and sometimes the change needs to be in how we think about and perceive our situation. Our perception becomes our reality.

When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.

George Bernard Shaw declared that he wanted to be “thoroughly used up” when he died and recognised that the true joy in life is

…the being used for a purpose recognised by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

So why is it so difficult for most people to create a powerful life?

Creating the life you want rather than existing in the life you think you have been given is a constant theme for many people. Many do their daily tasks out off a sense of duty, need or functionality, rather than through desire, passion and total engagement.

The power of our conscious and unconscious thinking determines what we can create and allow in our lives. Our ability to get in our own way, to limit ourselves and think too small for our own good is astounding. Our own thoughts most commonly destroy our creativity, imagination and the power of possibility. It is as if we are constantly at war within ourselves and we spend more time in “destruct mode”, than in creating possibilities for ourselves.

We can all think of times when we held back, played safe and didn’t take the risk. Marianne Williamson in her poem Our Deepest Fear says that

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

To consciously create a powerful life requires courage. That is not to say you don’t experience fear. A courageous action overcomes the immobilising power of fear and allows you to move above and beyond what has been holding you down. It takes more than positive thinking and repetitive affirmations to make lasting change. There is no point in telling yourself you are rich, famous, surrounded by beautiful people in your life, when everything in your life indicates that you are not.

Creating the reality you want to experience requires examining at your beliefs and values and figuring out how to align them with your hopes and aspirations. Once these are in alignment, you can begin to take action – to weave your story and create a fabric that is full with creativity, emotion and wonderment.
